A humble
thought that children should be educated to become self-reliant
kindled the heart of Dr.Gokhale, its Founder President to initiate
this movement under the name of Community Aid & Sponsorship
Programme (CASP). CASP is a National NGO, which upholds and protects
the rights of the children and helps them meet their basic needs,
especially their educational needs.
Incepted in 1975, CASP aims at:
•• Enabling
children, their families and communities to meet their basic needs.
•• Enhancing
their ability to participate in and benefit from their social
environment.
•• Promoting
the rights and interests of the child.
CASP’s
history in Kerala begins in 1982, when it joined hands with Rajagiri
College of Social Sciences, Kochi, by extending educational sponsorship
support to a handful of children and their families with the motto
of Child as the Focus, Family as the Unit and Community as the
Milieu of Development. Right now, CASP-Kerala Unit has 4200 children
in Kerala being supported by different sponsors in India and abroad.
No doubt, CASP’s success lies in its strategy, which is,
through the child, influence the family and then the community.
So
as a deviation from the conventional approach of child sponsorship,
CASP triggers a holistic development of the community where it
enters through undertaking programmes such as:
. ••
Women Empowerment
.
•• Sanitation
. •• Housing
..••
Micro Credit Co-operatives
..••
Drinking Water Project
..••
Solar Electrification Programme etc.
At
the moment CASP has 15 such communities in Kerala enjoying a balanced
growth.
